Unlocking Access To Healthcare: Government Schemes To Know

When the nation faces a perilous situation, we look towards the government for solutions. Let's look at the healthcare solutions (schemes) that the government has provided.

Access to healthcare is a fundamental right, but unfortunately, it is still a luxury for many people in India. Let’s be honest: our country’s healthcare system is still plagued by a shortage of resources, including doctors, nurses, and hospital beds, making it difficult for people to access quality healthcare.

That said, the Indian government has implemented several schemes to make healthcare accessible and affordable for all. Let’s look at some of the government schemes that every Indian should know.

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is one of the largest healthcare schemes in the world. Under this scheme, more than 10 crore families, or approximately 50 crore individuals, are provided with a health cover of up to Rs. 5 lakhs per year.

The AB-PMJAY covers hospitalisation expenses, including room charges, doctor's fees, and medicines, for over 1,500 medical procedures.

Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY)

The Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) is a government-funded health insurance scheme aimed at providing health insurance coverage to families below the poverty line.

Under this scheme, eligible families are provided with health cover of up to Rs. 30,000 per year for hospitalisation expenses.

Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA)

The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) is a government scheme aimed at ensuring the health and well-being of pregnant women.

Under this scheme, pregnant women are provided with free antenatal check-ups and necessary treatment to ensure a safe pregnancy and delivery.

National Health Mission (NHM)

The National Health Mission (NHM) is a flagship government program aimed at improving the healthcare infrastructure and services in the country.

The program focuses on providing universal access to healthcare services, including maternal and child healthcare, family planning, and disease control.

Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK)

The Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) is a government scheme aimed at providing free healthcare services to pregnant women and newborns.

Under this scheme, pregnant women and newborns are provided with free transportation to and from the hospital, free medicines and diagnostics, and free accommodation in case of hospitalisation.

National Rural Health Mission (NRHM)

The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) is a government scheme aimed at improving the healthcare infrastructure and services in rural areas.

The program focuses on providing accessible and affordable healthcare services to the rural population, including maternal and child healthcare, family planning, and disease control.

Most of these schemes cover hospitalisation and such expenses. You would still have to fend for yourself when it comes to daily medical bills like doctor consults, lab tests, medicines, healthcare essentials and such.
