Burnt out after working long hours all year? The holidays are a great time to kick back and relax. Here are Kenko's recommendations.
The winter holiday season is the best. The air is filled with festivities worldwide. We catch up with our families and friends, eat good food, and revel in a cheery mood. You’ve worked hard all year long. Now, it’s time to just let your hair down, relax, celebrate yourself, and indulge in some much-needed self-care.
Balancing work, health, and social life throughout the year would’ve been overwhelming. It must’ve felt challenging to juggle all three and still find time to rest. If you're tired and need tips to relax this holiday season, and rejuvenate and heal in time for the new year, here you go...
1. Read a book
Reading offers many benefits for human health. It slows down ageing. According to a study with 3,635 adult participants conducted over 12 years, people who read books regularly lived two years longer than those who didn't.
A good book can help divert your mind from all the random thoughts swirling around in your mind and get you grounded and peaceful. So pick up your favourite book, be it any genre, and just dive into it. It will sharpen your mind and strengthen your body and brain. And you’ll read a great new story to boot!
Reading is a great way to de-stress and rejuvenate your mind. It improves your vocabulary, helps you visualise better, and lowers your blood pressure.
2. Workout
At Kenko, we have already written about the benefits of working out on both your body and mind. A great way to feel refreshed is by doing an activity that gets your heart pumping. It can be as simple as skipping, doing yoga, or doing push-ups.
Working out to relax may seem odd, but no one can deny its effects on human health. Fifteen minutes of skipping invigorates the whole body, as does a 20-minute yoga session. Moving your body against gravity and stretching it makes you feel calm and refreshed.
Humans are made to move, and sometimes, you just need to get up and get going! Sweating it out and getting a good pump can rid your mind of the cobwebs and get you glowing.
3. Get a massage
Working takes up a lot of energy, whether you’re creating a detailed report in Excel or moving pallets of boxes from one place to another. Your body requires rest to function at its best, and getting a massage is a great way to relax.
Massage soothes sore muscles, and considering that our work lives are spent in front of laptops, most of us tend to have sore backs and stiffness in the spine. Our body gets weaker as we grow older, and we must care for our muscles and pamper them periodically to live long, healthy lives. Try aromatherapy or deep tissue massage, and your spine will thank you.
Massages, both with and without oil, are a fantastic way to rejuvenate your body. As long as humans have been moving, massage has been calming the mind and body for ages.
Get your whole body massaged at the nearest spa or an ayurvedic healing centre. Many places also offer a steam bath after a massage. Alternatively, you can book an at-home massage for yourself if you are starved for time or uncomfortable with the idea of stripping down in a strange place. We promise you it’ll be the best decision you make for yourself!
4. Eat your favourite foods
Food is fuel for your body, and the body sometimes craves sugars and fats. Although we recommend moderation when consuming sweets, it is good to have an indulgent snack now and then. And talking of delicious goodies, when else, if not during the holidays?
You can make it all even more fun by cooking together with your friends and family. Making your favourite foods from scratch can be therapeutic, and cooking is an essential life skill. It is the simplest joy to take a few everyday ingredients and transform them into something delicious that makes you feel hearty and fulfilled. Learning to cook at home is an exceptional way to rejuvenate your body and mind.
If cooking is not your thing or you just want a break from it, just order that tasty snack. You don’t need to cook if you are already overwhelmed with tasks and responsibilities and need help figuring out where to start. Eating good food is one of life's simplest pleasures, and you should treat yourself every once in a while.
